Installation Hardwood Floor in Wilmette – New project – this week my team start leveling subfloor & installation Graf Brothers manufacturing – Unfinished Solid White Oak 3” Rift & Quartered lenght 3’ and longer over the radiant heating

What type of wood flooring is best for radiant heat?
As a result of its stability, solid white oak can be successfully applied over radiant heat, while several other types of wood, including Brazilian Cherry, Maple, and Pecan are not recommended for use over radiant heat.

Quartersawn (Quartered and Rift) White Oak is prized for flooring, millwork, furniture and cabinetry for its highly stability and beauty. Rift only White Oak exhibits less Medullary Ray or Ray Fleck, while maintaining the same straight grain appearance as Quartered.
The rift and quartered board will only shrink in thickness and will remain stable in flooring, It is the best option for the radiant heated floors and critical applications. In general it is a superior choice to minimize seasonal gaps, buckling etc. It has stability rivaling engineered floors and longevity of the solid wood floor – that what makes rift/quartered sawn flooring the best choice , also very important after sanding is the use of appropriate materials finishes

Very Important !!!
Any wood flooring that can be used over radiant heat systems must be brought into the area in which it will be installed and allowed to acclimate for at least two weeks prior to the flooring being installed. We recommend the radiant heat be run at a temperature of 65-70 degrees two weeks prior to the wood flooring being brought in and until the wood flooring has been installed. Most newer radiant heat systems have exterior thermostats which will gradually bring up the temperature within the floor during the start of the colder season so that the heat will not shock the wood flooring causing the flooring to distort.
